Yoga for TMJ as presented by...
Lamont Gilliland, RYT & Simple Abundance Yoga

So, why is Lamont doing a special yoga workshop for TMJ sufferers?

In his late teens Lamont was in a serious automobile accident. Although he suffered no broken bones from this accident, the cervical area of his neck incurred significant trauma. Shortly after this accident Lamont began having recurring headaches. The intensity of these headaches increased over time. It wasn’t until his middle twenties that he discovered from a dental exam that he was suffering from TMJ issues. At that time there was limited knowledge and understanding of the causes of TMJ syndrome and appropriate treatment. Lamont was fitted with a splint with limited relief. Four crowns later and more than two decades of taking NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs), Lamont resigned himself to accepting that his TMJ headaches would be a lifelong struggle.

It appeared that there was no way to reverse the damage that took place as a result of the accident in his teens, In his late forties as he joined his wife, Wendy, in the practice of yoga, he began to notice that although he still dealt with TMJ issues, the frequency and severity of his headaches had diminished. Was this a coincidence or was there something unique about yoga and its affect on TMJ issues?

Lamont shares his thoughts on TMJ & yoga…

I have learned so much from the past few years of studying yoga, and my primary view of yoga is that it is a rebalancing force within our bodies. Although the damage from my accident in my teens could not necessarily be reversed, it seems that yoga served as a catalyst – allowing my body and mind to work together to rebalance and counter the negative influence of my TMJ syndrome. Do I believe that yoga has cured my TMJ issues? I believe that whatever damage that took place during this accident had a diverse impact on the overall systems within my body. Therefore, I do not believe that yoga has “cured” this damage – instead yoga is promoting and supporting my own body’s ability to heal itself.

What will this workshop be like and who should attend?

This workshop is open to anyone who believes that they may be able to benefit from the healing affects of yoga, particularly those who suffer from TMJ syndrome. It is not the intention of this workshop to replace any current treatment that you may be receiving for TMJ from a dentist, doctor, or other healthcare professional. It is the intention of this workshop to provide you with additional knowledge that could support your management of TMJ issues.

This workshop will not only include how yoga may help those dealing with TMJ issues, but will also include a variety of things that I have learned over the years. This workshop will not be a presentation format but will be an informal yoga class permitting me to share specific yoga poses, breathing techniques, etc.

This workshop is appropriate to those who have never practiced yoga and those who may already be practicing yoga.
